Once at the Nights Parting

Once at the Nights Parting

(Rich Mullins)

Once at the night's parting I heard the sky crying, "Where is the Son?"
I couldn't watch while He hung in me lost; And, now He's gone.
Once for a while He walked there on the sea; and, then he climbed
Up where they took His heart, not knowing they were stealing mine.
I heard when He prayed there in the garden-Not my will, but Yours-
I watched when He carried the cross-with a crown of thorns.
He held me so long ago. Now I am empty and
No memories could ever be the thing that He was to me.
Once at the days dawning, I saw the stone falling away from the tomb.
All heaven seemed to recognize a brilliance twice as bright as Summer's noon!
Lovelier than music, He sang His songs 'til the temples of earth shook!
Letting loose His laughter, earth winced ..and from heaven she heard.
I heard when you prayed there in the garden-Not my will, but Yours
I watched when you carried the cross-with a crown of thorns.
You loved me so long ago; and, now You have come back home.
Memories will never be the thing that You are to me.
Once at the night's parting
I heard the sky crying, “Where is the Son?”
