Lonely World

Lonely World

(Rich Mullins, December 1976)

This is a boy who sings because it's in his soul to do it.
Not because a teacher told him so.
The glad remains that emerge from the things that he's now through with..
things that he was into long ago

Got a fist full of stars. And, he throws them on the water..
collects the mists and the sparks as a gift for Israel's daughter.
And, he sings this song 'cause it's one that he knows.

You got your friends. I got my music.
You got your dreams. And, I got my songs.
You got your hopes. And, I hopes you never lose it.
'Cause it's a lonely world when your hopes are gone.

I live in a world that you could never see.
I step out from time to time
to let you know that I'm just as happy as anyone can be
in this lonely world of mine.

This is a boy who laughs because of something he won't tell you.
You wouldn't think it's funny anyhow.
Long lost friends from a minute ago stare at the looking glass he fell through
and Wonder where in the world he'll go now.

But, he didn't seem to mind. In fact, he's become quite forgiving.
Not athletically inclined,
but he sure gets a kick out of rhythm.
And, he sings this song cause it's one that he knows.

You got your friends. But me, I got my music.
You got your dreams. And, I got my songs.
You got your hopes. And, I hope you never lose it.
'Cause it's a lonely world when your hopes are gone.

And, I live in a world that you may never see,
slippin' out from time to time.
Just to let you know that I'm as happy as can be
in this lonely world of mine.

And, this is the boy who shines because the light has shone upon him
long ago when a lamp to his feet was lit.
And, he knows quite well that all those pretty things you may be wanting
ain't the same as the ugly things you get.

And, he thinks this is the law.
And, he thinks it's universal.
He believes this way because he's had so many rehearsals.
And, he sings this song 'cause it's one that he knows.

You got your friends. Me, I got my music.
You got your dreams. And, I got my songs.
You got your hopes. And, I hope you never lose it.
'Cause it's a lonely world when your hopes are gone.

And, I live in a world that you will never see.
I step out from time to time
to let you know that I'm as happy as can be
in this lonely world of mine.

This here's a boy who sings because of something that he touches
that's turned him into gold.
He knows quite well the music is a baby hidden in the bullrushes..
don't matter much what you've been told.

He don't seem to mind.
In fact, he's become quite forgiving.
Not athletically inclined,
but he sure gets a kick out of rhythm.
And, He sings this song 'cause it's one that he knows.

If you lose your dreams, well, I'll play you my music.
If you lose your friends, I'll play you my songs.
If you lose your hopes, I'll point you back to Jesus.
'cause He's the only One who can lead us home.

And, we all live in places that no one else can see.
And, we step out from time to time
to let all the other people know we're as happy as can be
in this lonely world of mine.
