I Close My Eyes (A Winter Song)

I Close My Eyes (A Winter Song)

(Rich Mullins)

Light the sky, you stars, with reverence...
Winter's on his way.
With white and silent blessings he will visit this green land.
His clothes are stained with darkness and his beard is silver-grey.
Light the sky with reverence.
Healing comes again.
Shed your leaves, you trees, stand up naked in the dawn.
Night time sing your news while sleepers, cozy in their beds,
awake and think of warmer days.
But, knowing they are gone, they'll take to dreaming (and lose that too)
And shake their weary heads.
And, if you don't understand what it means, don't pretend you do.
You'll find no safety living in the land of your dreams,
And, there's certain to be terror in knowing the truth.
Light the ritual fires upon the altar of your soul, there it burns upon you.
Let it be for you a light.
For all you would have offered up lies sleeping beneath the snow.
Well, let your temple crumble
It's your only sacrifice.
January rides a raven, his ways are concealed.
Dimly, down his shadow falls upon a barren earth.
There's freedom in your ways, cry those whose lives are tied up in fields
And, in your silences there's a promising of birth.
And, if you don't understand what it means, don't pretend you do.
You'll find no safety living in the land of your dreams,
And, there's certain to be terror in knowing the truth.
I know the truth. I know the truth.
I know the truth. I know the truth.
Come take me death! I give myself to you.
Come take me death! I give myself to you.
I close my eyes.
I close my eyes.
Light the sky, you stars, with reverence..
Winter's on his way.
With white and silent blessings
he will visit this green land.
His clothes are stained with darkness
and his beard is silver-grey.
Light the sky with reverence.
Healing comes again.
Healing comes again.
